Community Garden
In the summer of 2009 a Community Garden was initiated at Bernardine Center to provide a place for people to grow their own vegetables while learning the skills of earth-care and sustainable gardening. Without the presence of supermarkets within the city of Chester, fresh produce has been at a minimum. Teaching gardening skills affords people access to fresh and nutritious vegetables grown close to home.
Interested gardeners rent 4 x 8 foot beds from May to September and plant vegetables of their choice. All produce is kept by the renter to enjoy at home. Some renters donate their produce to the Food Pantry. Vegetables are organically grown without harmful pesticides or herbicides. Gardeners experience the joy of working with the soil while learning the skills of earth-care and nutrition. Sharing garden experiences builds a sense of community among the gardeners.
